The Class A State Track Meet was held from Thursday, May 23rd through Saturday, May 25th in Sioux Falls at the Howard Wood Field. This was the 119th year that this annual 3-day event was held. Eleven athletes from the Wagner Community School qualified for the Class A State Track Meet. One of the two athletes that brought home state champion titles was Jhett Breen. Jhett won the title of Class A State Champion in the 300m Hurdle event.

Read moreThis year was the first year that Andes Central/Dakota Christian participated in the javelin track and field event. The javelin throw became a sanctioned event for South Dakota high school track and field in 2022. This year marked the first time that South Dakota would have a female state javelin champion; for the boys it was the first year since 1929 that a javelin title would be awarded. The javelin that the boys throw weighs 1.76 pounds and is 8 feet 6.4 inches long as opposed to the javelin that the girls throw which weighs 1.3 pounds and is 7 feet 2.6 inches long. In this inaugural year, the Andes Central/ Dakota Christian track team had two boys and four girls who competed in the event this season. Of the six competitors, one, Madilyn Janis made it to the Class B State Track Meet.

Leah DeWald delivered one hit in the inning scoringthefinalrun.However, theElitecouldnotholdthelead and surrendered 8 runs to Vermillion inthetopofthesecond. A series of walks and errors doomed the Elite. The Elite thengaveup2morerunsinthe topofthe3rdtofallbehind10-8. WithtimerunningouttheElite battled back in their last at bat. Sidney Johnson walked and Harper Kracht followed with a base hit driving in Johnson. Kracht eventually scored on a series of passed balls. Emeryson Haenfer walked, stole second and then ultimately scored the winning run on a pass ball. Haenfler started on the mound and was relieved by Leah DeWald who picked up the win.
