The Red Raider Boys Basketball team opened up their season Friday night against the Winner Warriors. Wagner played well and hung kept the score close the entire game against a good Winner team. The Warriors took a 15-14 lead after the first period and Wagner trailed 32-28 at the half. Winner expanded its lead by one point in the third quarter leading 44-39. Wanger made some shots down the stretch to cut the lead down to three points at times in the fourth quarter but never tied the game or got a lead. Winner made a few free throws at the end of the game making the final score 56-49. Nolan Carda led the way for Wagner scoring 14 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. Dustin Honomichl finished with 10 points, Toby Zephier scored 6 and grabbed 6 rebounds, Simon Freier scored 6 points and had 7 rebounds, Marcus Zephier added 6 points, Chris Nelson 5 and Jaden Peters 2. Jaden Peters had a great game defensively as he was asked to guard one of the best players in Class A and held him under his average points per game. Wagner will be in action at Irene Wakanda on Tuesday night.

Preston McFayden is still in middle school but that didn’t stop him from achieving a goal set by the high school basketball team. In a year full of challenges due to Covid-19, Preston stayed focused through it all and achieved his goal.

The Raiders kicked off their 2020 season against Winner Area and Burke/Gregory in a triangular in Wagner on Thursday, December 10th. The Raiders came up short in both duals. Due to a combination of injury and illness we were only able to put six kids on the mat on Thursday’s competition.

Wagner Invitational was held December 12 with Chamberlain, Vermillion, Parkston/Ethan/ Hanson, Wagner/Bon Homme, West Central and Stanley County.

State was the final destination for the 2020 Oral Interp season. Rather, it was the final “Virtual Destination” for this season. Yes, it has been quite the season with many unknowns. But, we as The Oral Interp Community in South Dakota, knew we would continue on. We went into this season knowing it was going to be a different type of challenge from the get-go.

In a truly grand feat of modern science, The Human Genome Project, an international collaborative effort, set out in 1990 to map our genetic makeup using diverse human genetic samples. In 2003 the project was completed, ultimately showing about 20,000 human genes. Since that project’s completion, with everimproving DNA sequencing technology, genomics researchers continue to gather more and more information about human DNA.

A few weeks ago a recently widowed lady and avid column reader called. She wanted to know if I would look over her late husband’s guns and place an approximate value on them. Though I’m certainly not in the appraisal business, I told her I’d help her out. The guns ranged from a Colt AR-15 semiautomatic rifle to an antique Ithica double barrel shotgun with Damascus barrels and side hammers. Most of the appraisal was easy enough, but I had no idea as to the value of the old Ithica double barrel.
