Funeral services for Marjorie M. DeJong, 90, of Avon, were held Monday, August 19 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield. Burial was in the Emmanuel Cemetery, rural Springfield. Peters Funeral Chapel in Springfield was in charge of arrangements. Marjorie M. DeJong was born November 14, 1933 to John and Henrietta (Schipper) DeVelder in rural Douglas County. Marge died August 15, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall. Marge attended New Holland Christian School. She was a member of the New Holland Christian Reformed Church until she married and then went to the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield. Marge married Willis DeJong at her parents’ rural home in Harrison November 27, 1956. Six children were blessed to their union. Together they farmed in the Springfield area all of their lives. She worked hard on the farm alongside Willis, milking cows, and bringing coffee and meals to the field countless times. Marge loved the farm and her farm animals. She enjoyed baking homemade bread, gardening, and canning her garden's produce. Later in life, she loved feeding and watching birds and coffee with neighbors. Marge was known to be quiet and humble. Everyone commented that she always had a smile to share. She sent every member of her family handwritten notes and cards on their birthdays and anniversaries. Thankful for having shared her life are children: Marlis (Ken) Eben of Avon, Wilma (Greg) Vinzant of Sioux Falls, Roger (Candy) DeJong of Springfield, Dennis (Blanche) DeJong of Avon, Cal (Tammy) DeJong of Springfield, and Wanda Jeffcoat of Sioux Falls; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; sister Geraldine Buck; brother Harley (Joan) DeVelder; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Marge was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Willis; parents; grandson Casey DeJong; sister Lila Vanderlei; and brothers-inlaw Clarence Vanderlei and Clarence Buck.
