ART CANFIELD
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 4 at Peters Funeral Home in Wagner. Burial was in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner, with military honors.
Arthur "Art" Charles Canfield was born August 14, 1935 to George M. and Hermina A. (Bucholz) Canfield in Springfield, the fifth of seven children. He passed away at the Good Samaritan Home in Wagner on Wednesday, December 1.
Art attended Charles Mix County Rouse #5 country school in rural Wagner through the 8th grade. He later joined the Army and served over seas from May 1958 to April 1960.
After returning to the family farm from the Army, he worked as a hired hand for area farmers for many years. Art loved to work the soil whenever he could. If he wasn't in the fields, he could always be found at his farm in the giant gardens he would plant, tend to and harvest. In the fall, he enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor with so many family and friends and strangers, even as far as Nebraska. He also took care of his mother until her death on January 6, 1995. After her death, Art took a job in Avon at the Meadow View Manor as a cooks assistant for Senior Meals. Art could always be counted on to help others.
The Summer of 2011 brought the Missouri River Flood that took the family farm, his gardens and his home. He was moved to Avon to the Meadow View Manor where he resided until his own health failed.
Art was always quick with a joke or two, a story to tell and always had a twinkle in his eye. He could always find something to make you laugh about. He enjoyed traveling the area back roads, and watching the wildlife out his front door.
He is survived by his brother, Benjamin (Diane) Canfield of Liberty Lake, WA and sisters: Bess Houska of Yankton and Mildred Ramsdell of Wagner; and many nieces and nephews.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, George (1939) and Hermina (1995), brothers: William (1959) and Robert (2012); and sister, Mary Bucholz (2019).
