Read moreThe number 6 seeded Red Raiders traveled to Alexandria to take on the number 3 seeded Hanson Beavers in the first round of region 5 play on Tuesday night. Wagner got off to a bit of a slow start, they trailed 21-7 after the first quarter. The boys battled back cutting the lead numerous times to 7 or 8 points but could not get any closer than that. Wanger played tough but had trouble with Hanson’s impressive man to man defense. Carter Cournoyer led the team with 14 points, Chris Nelson added 12, Matt Link and Preston McFayden each scored 5, Joey Cournoyer and Parker Petry each scored 4. The Red Raiders finished the season with an 8-13 record.
Read moreThe Red Raiders played their final game of the season Monday against Beresford. Wagner started off strong and led 8-4 after the first quarter and 18-9 at half time. Beresford’s pressure defense would prove to be too much for Wagner to handle in the second half and the Red Raiders fell 41-33. Brady Cournoyer led the team with 10 points, Javian Pesicka added 8, Jesse Zephier, Hunter Lhotak and Parker Petry each scored 4 and Frank Soukup scored 3. The Red Raider JV finished the season with a 13-6 record.
Read moreThe Red Raiders played their final regular season game Monday night against the Watch Dogs from Beresford. Wagner led 13-9 after the first period and 24-22 at the half. The Red Raiders third quarter woes continued Monday night as they were outscored 17-6 and trailed 39-30 heading into the final period. Wagner battled back to get within 4 points but could not get the lead and lost the game 54-49. Preston McFayden finished with a team high 18 points, Ted Slaba and Chris Nelson each scored 10, Joey Cournoyer added 6, Carter Cournoyer 3 and Parker Petry 2. Wagner will take an 8-12 record into region 5 play next week.
Read moreThe Wagner 7th/8th basketball teams concluded their seasons with a pair of games against the Winner Warriors at the Armory in Wagner on Monday, February 27. In the 7th grade game, the Warriors jumped out to an early 8-4 lead after the first quarter. The Raiders went on a run at the beginning of the second quarter to pull within a point, but Winner ended the half on a run of their own to maintain a 17-12 lead at the half. The teams traded baskets in the 3rd quarter to keep the Warriors lead at 5 going into the 4th quarter. The Raiders closed the gap to a one possession game, but couldn’t quite get over the hump as they were defeated by a score of 24-21. The Raiders finish the season with a record of 9-6. Leading scorers were Cruise Koupal with 7, Paxton Kuhlman with 6, Brannon Bruguier with 5, and Payne Petry with 3. Members of the 7th grade team include: Brannon Bruguier, Brock Cournoyer, Kayo Fischer, Jacob Kotab, Cruise Koupal, Isaiah Marshall, Steven Peters, Payne Petry, Zaiden Ross and Gavin Tjeerdsma.
Read moreThe Raiders finished their season in Rapid City at the South Dakota Class B state wrestling tournament on Friday February 24. We brought four guys to the state tournament and brought home ninth place as a team. The four guys we brought to the tournament were Karstyn Lhotak (120), Jhett Breen (138), Gannon Knebel (160) and Tim Bouza (220) who all placed top eight as individuals.
