The Lady Raiders hosted the O’Neill Eagles last Tuesday night in girls basketball action. Wagner would start out fast to a 7-0 run forcing the eagles to take an early timeout. Wagner would then increase it’s lead to 19-3 after the first quarter and coast to a 61-14 victory. Wagner would shoot well from the field converting on 24-47 from the field for 51% and holding the Eagles to just 11%, 4-35 from the field. Wagner once again would dominate the glass with a 35-14 advantage. One stat that really never shows up big on a stat sheet is blocks, but tonight the Raiders would swat 18 shots away from the rim. Ashlyn Koupal would lead all scorers with 16 points, grab 7 boards, dish out 2 assists, and block 8 shots. Emma Yost would add 15 points, grab a team high 8 boards, dish out 3 assists, and block 2 shots. Shalayne Nagel would also hit double figures with 11 points while grabbing 5 boards, dishing out a team high 5 assists, grab 5 steals, and block 5 shots. Lydia Yost would be the 4th Raider in double figures with 10 points and grabbing 3 boards. Macy Koupal would chip in 5 points, while grabbing 7 boards, and dishing out 4 assists, and coming away with 2 steals. Eve Zephier and Jessica Kocer would each add 2 points. “It was really great for the girls to come and execute on both ends after and emotional high intense game last Saturday. Sometimes you play those big games and then have a hiccup, but the girls responded with nothing than what is expected from them. We controlled the glass, got out in transition, and once again clamped down on the defensive end. We altered a lot of shots as well as blocked a bunch of them. Next week will be another big week for us with MVP coming to town on Tuesday, Scotland Thursday, and then the Sacred Hoops Classic at Augustan College next Saturday.”
Read moreThe Wagner boys lost to a very good O’Neill team on Tuesday night. The Red Raiders played a good first half trailing by just 5 points with 3 minutes to go in the second quarter. The Eagles dominated the game from that point on. Wagner trailed 25-47 at the half and lost the game 83-43. Chris Nelson led the team with 14 points and 4 rebounds. Chris also played stellar defense on one of the best players in our area. Toby Zephier finished the game with 11 points and 3 assists, Dustin Honomichl added 9 points and 8 rebounds, Matt Link scored 6, Preston McFayden, Carter Cournoyer and Joey Cournoyer each added 2.

The Red Raiders played solid defense in the third quarter holding O’Neill to just 4 points, Wagner led 35-29 heading into the final period. The Red Raiders held on to win the game 43-36. Ted Slaba burned up the nets with 17 points, Carter Cournoyer added 8, Preston McFayden 7, Glenn Cournoyer 6, Joey Cournoyer 4 and Brady Cournoyer 1.

O’Neill came charging back scoring 33 second half points defeating Wagner 46-39. Read moreThis year Becky Haenfler’s junior high girls basketball team consists of three 8th graders (Kate Swier, Lexi Vanderlei, Abby Gretschmann) and five 7th graders (Jordyn Voigt, Rilyn Thury, Breanna Hento, Tessa Pazour, Charlie Simpson). The season ended with a record of 13-6, placing 2nd at the Wagner tournament, and 2nd at their conference tournament. The team worked very hard all season, and the girls got to play a lot of minutes of basketball.
