Living in a small town, we are often inclined to see change in our community as a threat to ourselves and our way of life. When we feel threatened by change uncertainty rears its ugly head and our negativity often takes over. We say things like – “What’s wrong with the way we’ve always done it.” or “Why do we need something new, the old one’s just fine?” or “We can’t afford that.” or “That will never work, we’ve tried it before.” And, sometimes we just outright disguise our negativity as facts, experience, or helpful guidance.

His father, Theophile Bruguier, was a Canadian Frenchman born near Montreal in 1813. Theo eventually settled near the mouth of the Big Sioux River on the Iowa side, and in 1855 received government contracts to furnish supplies to the Indians living along the Missouri. A French settlement grew near the mouth of the Big Sioux, and most of these Frenchmen took Indian wives.

Not that I’m here to air my dirty laundry publicly, like so many now do, as though it were the new method for displaying one’s honor. “Truth in transparency” or whatever the saying is, meant to justify putting all the details of one’s personal life out there for God and anyone with an internet connection to see and offer comment. Maybe this is the same thing, but anyway, back to my personal struggle.

Read moreOn Wednesday, May 25th, we stopped by the Ft. Pierre Game, Fish, & Parks licensing office. Betsy and I were on the way to visit rancher friends where I have hunted for the past 53 years. I told the Game & Fish people that I was a technological klutz, and that I was having trouble submitting my deer license application on my computer. They told me that the system was broken down and gave me a hard copy application. One thing I read on that application really bothered me and I’ll quote it. “NOTE: In 2023, all applications must be submitted on line.”
