I’ve always loved South Dakota history, especially when I can see or interact with tangible objects that were part of significant events or belonged to culturally important people. I knew I couldn’t be alone in that affinity, so I asked Ben Jones, our state historian and director of the South Dakota State Historical Society. He mentioned a recent American Historical Association study that found people prefer to visit museums and historical sites — where they can interact with historical objects — rather than read history books. “The draw is that they want to see the real, tangible thing,” he said.

Read moreI love sports. I have enjoyed playing and watching sports for as long as I can remember. And as someone who participated in a sport year-round in high school and continued in athletics (golf) in college, I am constantly grateful for the large impact being able to play competitive sports has had in my life.
Read more(WAGNER) – RF Buche, President of G.F. Buche Co., has been selected as a featured panelist for the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, September 28 th in Washington, D.C. The event marks the first conference of its kind in over 50 years. At the previous meeting, a groundbreaking nutrition education and food voucher program called WIC (Women, Infants and Children) was developed. The goal of the conference is to bring together public and private sectors to coordinate a strategy to end hunger, improve nutrition and increase physical activity. Buche is very familiar with the disparities surrounding these issues. “We see it every day in our rural and native American communities,” said Buche. “There’s a lack of healthier options and affordable options and this conference is an opportunity to be part of the solutions.” The agenda will feature discussions on the federal government’s national strategy to end hunger and reduce diet-related diseases - and how leaders can best help. Specifically, Buche will discuss his experience working with native American communities, and the initiatives G.F. Buche Company has undertaken. He hopes to underscore the urgency of the health and nutrition crisis.

Dave supplied the lures, rods and reels, and I became acquainted with the Shimano Calcutta big casting reel- the finest fishing reel I have ever used. Though I don’t like spending a lot of money on equipment, I bought myself a Shimano Calcutta. That reel has proven invaluable in recent years and I look at it as a precision instrument. That night Jerry and I took trophy muskies, myself using that Calcutta reel.
Read moreHere in South Dakota, we are repeatedly getting asked to turn over our land to private companies in the name of public use. Landowners, including those who feed their families (and this country) with the production of agricultural products, are being asked to open the gate and hand over the keys. The use of eminent domain has certainly become, before our eyes, a modern legal problem.
Read moreI’ve never been the type to settle for “good enough.” No matter what I’m doing, I try to strive for excellence. That’s all the more true when it comes to policies that impact our kids. Everything that I do as Governor is to make our state safer, stronger, and healthier for our kids and our grandkids, and I want to set the bar. We should set an example for the entire nation and send the message that South Dakota pursues excellence for our kids.
