The South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA)AcademicAchievementTeamAwardrecognizes athletic teams and fine arts groups for their academic excellence. This award was first established during the 1996-1997 school year. In order to be eligible for this award, a team must participate in SDHSAA sponsored activities and have a combined grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. We had an early start Monday, June 17, as students met in the Sioux Falls airport for what was supposed to be a 5 a.m. flight to Minneapolis on their way to the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Unfortunately, thunderstorms that struck the area led to a handful of delays out of Sioux Falls. By the time we landed in Minneapolis, our next flight was taking off. This gave seven WCS students an experience of a long lay-over in an airport that they would encounter again before arriving home at the end of the week. WCS students Jhett Breen, McKenzie Fuchs, Aubrey Medricky, Justyn Jaton, Matthew Kokes, Brooklin Nielsen and Kortney Ehrisman spent five days experiencing hands-on learning experiences as they navigated through airports, the nation’s capital city and the largest city in the nation.

Shona Kocer, daughter of Francis and Karla Kocer attended the Boys and Girls Club of America Midwest Regional Youth of the Year in Chicago, IL on June 27th. The event was held at the theater on the lake on Lake Michigan. The midwest regional consists of 12 other states competing to send their student to the national competition. The winner at the midwest regional level won a $20,000 scholarship and will move on to the national contest that will be held in September. The national winner will receive a brand-new Toyota Corolla and a $50,000 scholarship.

Mary Jo Parker and Rebecca Beeson attended the 2024 South Dakota State University (SDSU) Energize Conference held on May 22nd and 23rd in Hot Springs. This was the third year that Mary Jo attended the event and Rebecca’s first year attending. There were approximately 140 people registered for the conference representing communities from across South Dakota. Previous energize conferences have been hosted in DeSmet, Lemmon, Milbank, Fort Pierre and Wessington Springs.
