The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) South Dakota held its first annual Girl’s State in 1947 in Mitchell on the Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) campus. 117 girls attended the first year. DWU held the annual event until 1985 when Girl’s State was moved to the South Dakota State University (SDSU) campus. Girl’s State changed locations a final time in 2002 when it was moved to its current location on the University of South Dakota (USD) campus at Vermillion. Currently over 400 young women attend the ALA South Dakota Girl’s State’s annual event.
Read moreThe Wagner Rotarians were treated to a social night on Wednesday, December 27th at their club residence on Main Street. The evening began with a Social Half-Hour followed by a delicious meal. The theme of the evening was all about the country of India. Michelle and Gerrit Juffer recently returned from a Rotary Exchange Trip to this country. Exchange trips vary from country to country around the globe. Rotarians from each District are eligible and must apply for the travel exchange. They are always escorted by the Rotarians of the district in the country they are visiting. They also stay at the Rotarians homes or in a hotel of Rotary’s choice.

Read moreThis week’s featured Andes Central Senior is Hannah Tronvold. Hannah is the daughter of Kevin and Jolynn Tronvold. Hannah has four siblings Alyssa, Angelia, Aaron and Daaron. During her high school years, Hannah has been involved in volleyball, basketball, track, National Honor Society (NHS), and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). She has also done community service and volunteered her time helping with the Andes Central summer lunch program. Pizza is Hannah’s favorite school lunch. Her favorite class and teacher are Anatomy with Mrs. Maynard. Mrs. Maynard is her favorite teacher because she is such a fun teacher.

Read moreTerran Talsma attended and competed in the steer wrestling event at the Junior World Finals in Las Vegas on December 12th through the 16th. His best overall time was 6.4 seconds (an average of his five times), which was good, but did not earn Terran a place at the Junior World Finals. He competed against 45 of the best steer wrestlers in the world. Although he did not place, it did not stop Terran from having an amazing and memorable experience at the event.

Read moreAt 15 years old, Brylie Link is a young talented baker. Brylie has been baking since she was eight years old. She started baking at a young age with her grandma, Jolene Link, and ever since has been using all the tricks and tips that her grandma has taught her over the years. Not only does Brylie like to bake tried and true family recipes, but she also likes to venture out and experiment with new recipes that she comes across online. When asked what her favorite item to bake was, she simply could not choose one. Brylie said, “That is a tough question as there are many things that I enjoy baking.” There really is not anything that Brylie does not like to bake. The most difficult items that Brylie has ever baked are macaroons and chocolate croissants. They were difficult, but practice makes perfect and if one knows Brylie when it comes to baking, she is a perfectionist who practices her craft constantly. She likes her baked goods to look as beautiful as they taste. One area of baking that Brylie would like to get more comfortable with would be making different types of pastries. “I usually see a video of it being made or a picture of anything that looks good and I find the recipe and make it,” is what inspires Brylie to try to bake new goodies or try new baking techniques. She watches a lot of how-to videos, especially when she is trying something new or challenging in addition to making the recipes. When asked why she enjoyed baking so much she said, “It was what me and my grandma always preferred to do in the kitchen whenever I would go to her house.” Brylie also enjoys it because of the yummy things that can be created and it does not hurt that she has a sweet tooth.
