Jennifer Fischer demonstrated to the students of Avon and Bon Homme as well as neighbors and friends thepowerofsymbioticrelationships and the consequences in the amazing life underground. The interactive exercise included Jasmine Ruelas Hertz portrayedaBigBluestemplant as she shared sugar (candy) with other 'plants'[students] as they offered her nutrients in exchange for the candy. The importance of diversity was emphasized as each of the different 'plants' [students] provided moresucculentnutrients to Jasmine. As Jasmine was encircled with willing diverse plants [students], mycorrhizal fungi, depicted with yarn, crisscrossedtheneighborhood sharing nutrients with all the plants [students]. Then along came Declan Miner, depicting tillage equipment, and shattered the beneficial bacterial andfungalmutuallybeneficial neighborhood connections!

Avon's 1st and 2nd grade flag football had an enjoyable season competing in Yankton on Monday and Tuesday nights. They finished with a record of 3-3, which is great for how young they are! Looking forward to watching them improve each year!

Did you know that the library will be attending the Lake Andes Trunk or Treat on October 26th at the parking lot of Andes Central Schools. The library has many new books that will be part of the “treats,' and of course something sweet.

Avery Schacht is a volunteer fire fighter for the Lake Andes Fire Department and has been since 2021. She joined the department as soon as she turned 18 years old. Even though firefighting has become a way of life for Avery, it was not even on her list of career options until she was 16 when her interest in becoming a firefighter was sparked. She wanted to help her community and see what opportunities that firefighting could offer her. Avery is currently enrolled to take her Fire 1 and Fire 2 classes and has completed the introductory classes to be qualified as a wildland firefighter. She plans to continue to learn more about firefighting and advance in the industry. One certification that is at the top of her to do list is to become a sawyer. A sawyer is a wildland firefighter who cuts down trees and vegetation to create firebreaks in order to help manage the spread of wildfires.

Dwaine Davis is being honored as Avon’s October Veteran of the Month. Davis was a member of the United States Air Force beginning in April of 1984 for three years, 10 months and 11 days. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in March of 1988. Upon joining the Air Force, Davis was sent to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX for his basic training. When first joining the Air Force, it was Davis’ intention to be a F-100 jet mechanic. He had scored very high on his Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) with the score determining which jobs are available to choose from for military personnel. Unfortunately, during the physical screening, Davis was found to be colorblind which eliminated the possibility of him becoming a jet mechanic. As he was colorblind, he was given the choice between two guaranteed jobs in the Air Force. His choices were to either become a cook or a firefighter. Davis chose the latter of the two jobs.
