She was born October 5, 1945 in Sioux City, Iowa to Francis and Edna (Clifford) Lee. A funeral mass of celebration was held in Stevenson, Washington, at Star of the Sea Catholic Church on September 18.

She met her husband of 53 years, Jerry Novotny while attending the University of South Dakota from 1963 to 1965, when they married. Mary was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority while at the University. She later graduated from Yankton College in 1968. In 1983 Mary and family moved to Stevenson, Washington, where they lived until 1989. They then moved to Gresham, Oregon, where they lived from 1989 to 2018. She fought Parkinson’s and its various stages since her diagnosis at age 27.
