Codi Shields, 32, of Mitchell died Saturday, April 13, 2019 at her home in Mitchell. Wake services began Monday at the White Swan Community Center in Lake Andes. Burial was in St. Phillip’s Episcopal Cemetery in Lake Andes. Funeral services were Wednesday at the Community Center. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner was in charge of arrangements.

Codi Raye was born in Yankton to Kathleen “Short” Drapeaux and Gordon Shields on August 9, 1986.

She attended school at Andes Central in Lake Andes and graduated in May of 2004. She was known as an “Ah’biyena Ipiciyaye Winyan” or one who conducts herself in a quiet way.

Codi was so very active in the Braveheart activities especially in her teens with a special group of founding girls in this traditional revived society; after her “Isnati Awica Dowanpi” or Coming of Age Ceremony in 1997 at Owakpamni Otonwan or Greenwood. She overcame severe shyness to play a part in a Brave Heart play called Secrets that was presented at a national Youth Conference in Minneapolis with many other Brave Heart youth. She grew up facing great odds and was a very courageous individual.

Codi was preceded in death by her Mother Short, grandma Kunsi Lavina Gassman Drapeau, Deksi Ray Gassman and his sons, Walt, Marvin and Bobby Gasman; and many other grandmothers and grandfathers, such as Louie and Lillian Ree Gassman. She is descended from her great great great grandfather John Yellowthunder Gassman from Sicangu and Pretty Hawk, grandmother. Her Ihanktonwan great grandparents John McBride and Susanna McBride Rondell.

Codi is survived by seven children: Marquis, Neveah, Anneliese, Skyler, Shaniya, Leila and Nicolas III; five brothers: Jeremy, James (Alan), Johnathon, Jason, and Brian; four sisters: Leah, Angelique, Melodi and Agnes. She will be missed by her aunties (including Sharon, Faith, Mae, Judy, Donna) and many cousins and friends.
