WAGNER OPENS SEASON WITH A SWEEP
The Wagner Red Raiders opened up the 2018 season with a sweep of the Vermillion Tanagers. Wagner stayed perfect throughout the evening as the C and JV teams won 2-0 and the varsity pulled out the 3-0 win (25-14, 25-17, 25-23). The Red Raiders have been competing fiercely in the pre-season, and with their energy and selfless play, it should be an exciting year for Wagner Volleyball.
During the varsity match, Wagner was led by outside hitters, Abby Brunsing and Faith Tyler, as they threw down 13 and 11 kills respectively. Sophomore right-side hitter, Paige Petry was able to put away 5 kills, while Kayli Kocer added 3 more. Faith Tyler led the defense with 14 digs, while Brunsing and Kirstyn Roth scrapped for 7 apiece. Defensively at the net, Maesa Dvorak and Lizzie Tyler recorded 2 blocks. Behind the service line, Emilea Cimpl led all scorers with 16 points, and 5 aces while Faith Tyler added 12 points, including 3 aces. Lizzie Tyler dished out 18 assists, and Cimpl tallied 8 more in the win.
Dani Twiss and Lizzie Tyler led the JV team with 4 kills each, while Petry put away 3 more for the 25-22, 25-23 W. In the back-court, Callie Frei picked 5 digs, while Olivia Breen, Michelle Soukup, and Mackenzie Roberts picked up 2 apiece. Cimpl led in assists with 6, and Macy Koupal ended the match 5 assists.
The young C squad had a successful first outing as they downed the Tanagers 25-9, 25-16. Madi Knebel and Shona Kocer slammed down 5 kills each, while Avari Bruguier rallied for 4 more. Right-side hitter, Jessica Kocer added 3 kills to the mix. In the back court, Bruguier and Knebel scrambled for 6 digs apiece. Bruguier led the servers with 6 aces, and Shona Kocer had 5 more. Koupal ended the C match with 15 assists.
