Funeral Mass was Thursday, April 21 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Marty. Burial was in St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery in Marty. Peters Funeral Home in Wagner was in charge of arrangements.

Sr. Inez Teresa Jetty, a member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe, was born at St. Michael’s, ND, to Fred and Angeline “Lena” (Morin) Jetty on February 8, 1929. She died Sunday April 17, 2022 at the Lake Andes Senior Living Center in Lake Andes, SD. Sr. Inez made her first profession of vows in the Community of the Oblate Sisters on December 8, 1948 and perpetual vows on June 8, 1954. She was the fifth of ten children in the Jetty family.

Sr. Inez spent 27 years of her life teaching the elementary grades at St. Paul’s Indian School at Marty. She received her BA degree in English and a minor in Elementary Education in 1969 and her MA in Special Reading from USD in 1972. She served as Leader of the Oblate Sisters for two terms from 1976-1984. From 1984 to the time she began her residence on June 13, 2019 at the Health Care Center in Lake Andes, she was involved in pastoral ministry at St. Paul’s in Marty, St. Isaac Jogues parish in Rapid City, SD, and a number of parishes on the Cheyenne River Reservation. Sr. Inez also taught at the Ihanktowan Community College for a number of years. In addition to being an excellent teacher, Sr. Inez excelled in sewing, crocheting and native crafts.

She never forgot her visit to Rome for two separate occasions: (1980) beatification of St. Kateri Tekakwitha and (2000) the canonization of St. Katherine Drexel. When asked about one of her favorite things, Sr. Inez responded, “I love to pray the psalms morning and evening with my Oblate Sisters”. Sister’s profession ring is etched with her motto, “To Jesus through Mary”.

Sr. Inez is survived by three of her beloved Oblate Sisters, also Alfred “Bud” Jetty, Marianne McCulloch and Julie (Bill) King, a foster sister, Renita Delorme and foster brother, Roland Johnson. She also leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Fred and Lena Jetty; one brother, Oliver Jetty; six sisters: Eleanor Langstaff, Sarah Hoven, Cecelia Ives, Vivian Borseth, Jean Mudgett and Bonita Jetty; brothers-in-law: Lyle McCulloch, Pat Langstaff, Bud Borseth, Bernie Ives and Al Mudgett; sisters-in-law: Sara Baker Jetty and Frances Laverdure Jetty; and foster brothers: Chris Johnson, Jacob Abraham and Kenneth Abraham.
