MARIANA PETERS
Funeral services for Mariana (Acosta) Peters, 82, of Wagner, were held Wednesday May 1 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wagner. Burial will be at a later date in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner. Peters Funeral Home of Wagner was in charge of arrangements.
Mariana Acosta Peters was born December 31, 1941 to Pablo and Edelmira (Burgos) Acosta in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She died April 27, 2024 at Lake Andes Healthcare Center in Lake Andes. Mariana graduated from high school and after went to a technical school for two years.
Marianna and Robert Stringer were married in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico September 5, 1964, and to this union Robert M. and Mary were born. Mariana and Tyrone T. Peters were married July 27, 1974 in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico at the U.S. Naval Chapel Sabana Seca.
Throughout Mariana’s life she had numerous jobs. Upon completing her technical training, she was employed as a radio/ telephone switchboard operator. In 1975, when the family moved to SD, she worked as a mother and farm wife until Thomas started school. She helped out at King Koin Laundramat. After that, she began a career as a CNA working at Wagner Good Samaritan Society. She enjoyed working at the nursing home, but her helping hands didn’t stop there, she helped elderly community members with cleaning their homes, running errands, and getting meals. This led to her cleaning homes for many business and personal homes in Wagner and the surrounding communities up until her illness. Mariana helped with any translation that was needed for courts, schools, hospitals, and seemed to always make herself available to help any Spanish speaking people in the area.
Mariana loved quilting, flowers and gardening, music of all kinds especially 50’s and 60’s music. She had a huge heart always helping others. Most importantly she loved helping her children. She will always be remembered for her love of all animals, but especially dogs.
She is survived by her husband Tyrone; children: Mary Peters, Michelle (Mike) Robertson, Amy (Mike) Blaha, Mathew Peters all of Wagner, and Thomas (Audrey) Peters of New Castle, CO; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and brother Pablo Acosta of Puerto Rico.
Mariana was preceded in death by her parents; in-laws Elmer and Velda Peters; sisters Lila and Olympia; son Robert Peters; grandson Ty Robertson; and granddaughters Ella and McKenna Robertson.
