CAROLE L. BARTUNEK

Carole Lea Bartunek, 88, of Yankton, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2025, surrounded by family. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many, Carole’s warmth and laughter touched all who knew her. She will be remembered as someone who loved deeply, gave selflessly, and filled every room she entered with joy; besides giving the best hugs!

Born on August 27, 1937, in Sioux Falls, Carole was the cherished daughter of a close-knit family who instilled in her a passionate sense of faith, hard work, and compassion. She graduated from Avon High School, where she cultivated friendships and values that would remain throughout her life. After graduation, Carole began working at CR Industries, where she was respected for her dedication and cheerful demeanor. She also worked for St. Michael's Hospital and then answered phones at Sacred Heart Hospital too. Later, she opened her home and heart as an in-home daycare provider, nurturing countless children who came to adore “Miss Carole” and remember her fondly for her patience and care.

Carole’s proudest accomplishment was undoubtedly her family. She was a loving mother to her three children: Rod Bartunek from Seattle, Renee Knight from Fancy Gap, VA, and Tammy Rella from Old Bridge, NJ; and found immense joy in her expanding family circle. As a grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of six, she never missed an opportunity to celebrate a milestone, share a laugh, or offer a reassuring hug. Family gatherings were filled with her laughter, which was as warm and welcoming as her smile.

Throughout her life, Carole was known for her compassionate nature. She was always ready to lend a helping hand or an encouraging word. Her humor and light-hearted spirit could ease any tension, and her positive outlook inspired those around her to find joy in life’s simplest moments. One of Carole’s greatest pleasures was spending time with children (not just her own) and she found meaning and happiness in caring for others.

Carole’s hobbies and passions reflected her genuine love for life. She was delighted in traveling, exploring new locations, and dining out. She enjoyed browsing yard sales and collecting knickknacks, each trinket a small reminder of people and places she treasured. A social soul at heart Carole loved chatting with friends and neighbors, whether over a cup of coffee or during a spontaneous visit.

Her commitment to her community and faith ran deep. A longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Avon, Carole served in many roles and as a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, and a past PTA President. She approached every responsibility with sincerity and care, viewing her community as an extended family.

A Celebration of Carole’s life will take place on Monday, January 5, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Avon. A graveside service will follow at the Presbyterian Cemetery, and lunch will be served afterward at the church hall. Pastor Lorney VanGerpen will officiate the service. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the church on Sunday, January 4. Her funeral service will be live-streamed on the First Presbyterian Church-Avon, SD Facebook page. Peters Funeral Chapel in Avon is in charge of arrangements.

Carole is survived by her son Rod and wife Chris; daughter Renee and husband Lee Knight; and daughter Tammy and husband Father Francis Rella. Grandchildren are Micaela Bartunek, Jamie Cartes, Kyle Ramsdell, Alexcia Winebarger, Abby Chappell, and Rose, Maria, and Richard Rella. Great grandchildren are Silas, Ella, Eden and Emery Winebarger, Christian Cartes and Henry Chappell.

Carole was preceded in death by her parents Adolph and Hattie Rehurek, her husband Milo Bartunek, her brother Daniel Rehurek and grandson Victor Rella.

Our family is so thankful for the time and the experiences we had with Mom. Her love, laughter, and unwavering spirit will forever live in our hearts.
