However, they were stifled for the rest of the game and lost on a walk off single by Castlewood in the bottom of the fifth. Macy Voigt started the game for the Pirates. The starter gave up five hits and five runs over five innings, striking out five and walking four. Jordyn Voigt led Avon with two hits. Thury had two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Three huge defensive plays were made by Abby Gretschmann, Kaydence Metzger, and Lexi Vanderlei which helped keep the Pirates in the game. A spectacular combination grab of a fly ball between Lexi Vanderlei and Kaeli Wallinga ended the fourth inning.

It was a great day of competition and community spirit. The team should be proud of their strong performance and sportsmanship to end the tourney with 2nd place title.

Read moreOn Thursday, the Lady Pirates traveled to Yankton to play the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers. The Pirates fell short by a score of 13-1. Macy Voigt, Kaydence Metzger, and Rilyn Thury were on the hill for Avon. The girls pitched well but were hurt by several Pirate errors. Leading hitters for the Pirates were Rilyn Thury with two singles, Pria Sesler with one hit, and Macy Voigt with a single and an RBI. The Pirates next take on the Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones in Sioux Falls.

The Pirates return a strong contingent of players from last year's team.Leadingtheteamwillbesenior MacyVoigtwhowastheleadinghitter and starting pitcher from last year. We are looking for another strong year from Macy both on the hill and at the plate. Her battery mate Ashley Tolsmaisalsoexpectedtomakemajor contributions both on the defensive side as well as offensively. Kaeli Wallinga rounds out this talented senior class and will find playing time both at first base and in the outfield. Returning Juniors Abby Gretschmann and Lexi Vanderlei will be chasing down flyballs in the outfield. Two talented sophomores, Rilyn Thury and Jordyn Voigt also return. Rilyn is a greatall-aroundpitcher,infielder,and hitter who is a major threat to steal when on base. Jordyn is a jack of all trades and will be playing a variety of positions as well as serving as our leadoff hitter. Freshman Kaydence Metzger will add additional support on the hill and has greatly improved fromlastyear. FreshmanPriaSesler will be a reliable hitter in the 3 hole. We are fortunate to have a talented group of 7th and 8th graders who will be pushing for playing time. The coaches are very excited to work with this remarkable group of girls. The team is coached by Paul Kuhlman and assisted by Tom Pier, Christena Culver, and Laura Haynes.
