Our wildlife are at risk as hunters finance conservation. Our hunting is at risk as we become a small minority. Plain and simple, too many of today’s youth don’t have a mom or dad who can or will take them hunting.

As of Friday the 26th, Charles Mix County now shows that 40% of residents have completed the census. Lake Andes has had a major improvement from 9.3% to 27%. This is great, but we still have a long way to go. Ask your friends if they have completed the census. If you have completed your census, tell others how easy it was to complete. Remember the library is having a raffle for an I-pad for those completing the census. A computer is set aside for those wanting to complete the census on-line. It takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Chaplain Donald Kotab gave the invocation, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion was recited by all members.

Read moreWhen I last wrote about a reader’s successful deer hunt, I asked that any readers with a good deer story should contact me. Column reader Mark Sedlacek of Scotland gave me a call, and I paid him a visit. His living room walls were adorned with the shoulder and European mounts of deer that were at least as good as any deer I’ve ever bagged. I was certainly in the right place. Mark wanted to tell me about his 2009 season. Why 2009? As Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease has taken its toll in the past ten years, 2009 may be the last year we had trophy deer in numbers.
