According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation in the United States, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer does not just affect women. It is estimated that in 2023, 297,790 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here is one breast cancer survivor’s journey.

Eighteen years is also how long Tolsma’s Cove has been a member of the Avon Chamber of Commerce. The reason they joined the Chamber of Commerce was that it is a network of support for and from other businesses in helping to keep Avon a close-knit community. The Tolsma’s felt that being a part of the Chamber of Commerce really brought home the “Small Town-Big Heart” slogan of Avonandthatwassomethingthatthey wanted to be a part of.

The following students received awards: Kate Swier and Ashley Tolsma - 1st place Duet, Erica Cahoy and Jake Namminga - 2nd place Duet, Ella Hamilton and Abby Gretschmann - 4th place Duet, Readers Theater (Lexi Vanderlei, Abby Gretschmann, Jake Namminga, Hope Kemnitz, and Ella Hamilton) - 1st place, Ashley Tolsma - 1st place Humorous, Charli Simpson - 4th place Humorous, Kate Swier - 1st place Storytelling, Lexi Vanderlei - 2nd place Non-original Oratory, and Erica Cahoy - 4th place Poetry.
