All elders have a story to tell about their childhood and the life they led in the days gone by. However, not every elder is willing to share any of those childhood or life memories. The problem with not sharing them is the fact that they can be lost to time. Every memory has a lesson for someone to learn from. The 605 Unity Team is looking for those elders who are willing to share a few of those great memories with others during the 605 Unity JAM with is set for Sunday, June 11 at the Wagner Lake park.

Read moreMay 8, 1945 is remembered as V-E day, the end of WWII in the European theatre. Along with the end of the war came the release of those detained at Concentration Camps. The Holocaust is memorialized by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum located in Washington, D.C. The Museum in conjunction with First Book has curated a diverse collection of historically accurate and relevant books that libraries can use to increase the understanding of how and why the Holocaust happened. The Lake Andes Library was able to secure a donation of this curated collection of 9 titles to our library. Titles include “All But My Life” by Gerda Weissmann Klein, “Diary of Anne Frank”, by Anne Frank, “Games of Deception: The True Story of the First U.S. Olympic Basketball Team at the 1936 Olympics in Hitler’s Germany” by Andrew Maraniss, “I Have Lived a Thousand Years “, by Livia Bitton-Jackson, “Leap into Darkness: Seven Years on the Run in Wartime Europe” by Leo Bretholz, “Maus I A Survivor’s Tale : My Father Bleeds History”, by Art Speigelman, “Night” by Elie Wiesel, “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry, and lastly “The Light in Hidden Places” by Sharon Cameron.
Read moreBrookings, S.D. - Every year, a committee of students in the South Dakota State University College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) is tasked with selecting an outstanding teacher they feel has gone above and beyond in their role as an educator. Students and clubs within the college have the opportunity to nominate a CAFES teacher to receive the title of CAFES Teacher of the Year. This year’s recipient is Dr. Robert Thaler, Distinguished Professor and interim head of the Department of Animal Science. This will be Thaler’s third time being recognized as Teacher of the Year, as he was given the honor in 2000 and again in 2006.

Read moreThe Bon Homme County ChildProtection(CP)Teamhas been meeting throughout the school year to identify needs of families in the county and to find ways to provide for those needs. The CP team is comprised of representatives from each school district (administrators, school counselors, and school psychologists), Lewis and Clark Behavioral Health therapists,countylawenforcement, and area social service agencies. We collaborate on ways to raise funds as needs arise in Bon Homme County, including the communities of Avon, Scotland, Springfield, Tabor,andTyndall.Someofthe projectsthisyearincludedpurchasing gloves for each school district, organizing donations and providing holiday meals for families in each community, and purchasing family pool passes for a family in each community. The City Council or pool manager from each communitypoolwasconsulted and worked together with the CP team to make that happen. The CP team has also confidentially assisted families in getting connected with social service resources, family therapy, and individual counseling when needed. Glasses were provided for a student in need, and work was done to improve attendanceforfamiliesinneed of transportation. Funds were provided to a family in need of groceries around the holiday season. The CP team plans to provide school supplies to families in need in the fall.
